Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common patient questions about advanced mental health treatments — and how Lumora helps you access them.
Who qualifies for ketamine, TMS, or SPRAVATO® treatment?
Advanced treatments like ketamine, TMS, and SPRAVATO® are typically recommended for people with treatment-resistant mental health conditions — meaning they haven’t found relief through traditional medications or therapy. Each treatment has specific eligibility criteria, determined by a clinical provider based on your diagnosis, treatment history, and current symptoms. A consultation is the first step in finding out what’s right for you.
No. Ketamine therapy for mental health requires a formal diagnosis. Before starting treatment, you’ll meet with a licensed medical provider who will review your mental health history and determine whether you meet clinical criteria for conditions like depression, PTSD, or anxiety.
You don’t need a referral from another provider — but you do need to complete a consultation with a clinic offering the treatment.
Yes. Many people continue their existing medications during treatment. Your care team will review your current prescriptions to ensure safety, especially for treatments like SPRAVATO®, which must be used alongside an oral antidepressant.
Yes. These treatments are often used when therapy or medications haven’t provided enough relief. A clinical consultation helps determine whether you may benefit from TMS, ketamine therapy, or SPRAVATO®.
You’ll begin with a consultation to assess your symptoms and history. If you’re eligible, a personalized care plan will be created. Treatments are delivered in a clinic, typically over several weeks, and are closely monitored by trained providers.
Plan to stay for about two hours per session. After administering the nasal spray, patients are observed on-site to monitor for side effects or sedation. You’ll need to arrange transportation home.
You can drive after TMS, but not after ketamine or SPRAVATO® treatments. Both ketamine and SPRAVATO® can temporarily impair coordination or alertness. Clinics require patients to leave with a responsible adult.
Ketamine may cause a dreamlike or dissociative sensation, which is temporary and fades after treatment. TMS feels like a tapping sensation on your scalp — it’s non-invasive and doesn’t affect your awareness or thinking.
Not usually. Most patients continue their medications during treatment. Your care team will evaluate potential interactions and make recommendations if any adjustments are needed.
Some people notice improvements within days or weeks. Others may take longer. Ketamine and SPRAVATO® are designed to work faster than traditional antidepressants, but results vary from person to person.
Yes. TMS is FDA-cleared for OCD and commonly used off-label for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Your provider will determine the right protocol based on your diagnosis and symptom profile.
When administered in a clinical setting, ketamine is generally safe. Possible side effects include nausea, dizziness, dissociation, and increased blood pressure. All sessions are monitored by trained staff to ensure your safety.
Relief can last weeks to months. Some patients may need periodic booster sessions to maintain results. Your provider will help monitor outcomes and recommend a long-term care plan if needed.
Yes. If one treatment doesn’t work, your provider may recommend another option. Lumora partners with clinics offering multiple advanced therapies — so your care path can evolve based on what you need.
